A very popular method of dog fences has come to light in the form of electronic dog training fences that are much more reasonable in cost and also takes a lot less time to install.  These dog fences are often referred to as dog training fences, as they assist in the training of your dog to stay on your property and not have to be tied up. These systems should not be used for puppies under the age of 6 months, for small dogs or for pregnant dogs, as the shock may be too much for them. There are 2 different kinds of electronic dog fences, the wireless fence and the underground fence.

Wireless dog training fences are portable and are pretty cool. You simply plug in the transmitter, set up the boundary flags around the boundary area that is determined by where you place the transmitter and it is ready to go once you have done the training with your dog. If you go away, you can take it with you. They are sometimes referred to as “Instant Fences”. You need an open area in your yard as the transmitter’s signal will not go through trees or structures. The boundary area is oval in shape and is not flexible. The way that this system works, is that the transmitter sends a signal to the dog collar that will be activated if the dog goes close to or over the boundary area.

Wireless Dog Training Fences

With underground dog training fences, you can actually customize the area that you want to contain your dog. You need to plan out where you want to go and then you must dig down a few inches and bury the wire. Instead of burying the wire, some people choose to staple the wire to boards that are on top of the ground or zip tie the wire to an existing fence. This system is more labor intensive and certainly is not portable. This system is probably better though if you have a large property and want the whole property for your dog as the ones that are portable would probably get into a mess with the amount of wire that you would have to have with a large property.

All of the electronic dog training fences basically have 3 components:

• the collar
• the receiver
• the flags that are used as markers

The electronic collar receives a signal from the transmitter if your dog goes too close to the wire or the boundary which is marked by the flags. There would be a beeping noise or a vibration made by the collar. If they go even closer to the boundary there will be a mild static shock to train them not to go any closer. The actual beeping sounds or tones and the corrections given off by the collar vary with the type of system and by the manufacturer of the electronic fencing system. 

It is recommended that you do three 15 minute dog training sessions with your dog each day and it should take approximately 3 weeks for your dog to be fully trained. You will need to follow the exercises that come with the system, that will teach your dog to stay within the new boundaries that you have established and the consequences that will happen if they don’t stay in those boundaries. The dog will only need a few zaps from the collar before they realize where not to go. It is important that the collar is waterproof and rust proof. Some systems have the ability to support more than one dog and some can only have one dog. So that is something to think about if you have more than one dog or are thinking about getting another dog.

Training Your Dog To Use The Electric Dog Fence

The wire would vary by what gauge that you got and the thicker the gauge the more expensive, but also the better the system. If you buy the wire yourself, it is recommended that you buy solid core copper wire that is between 16 and 20 gauge. If you are using a system that will be running under water, the wire should be put into a garden hose or into PVC pipe so that it is protected.

There are some animal activists that are against these types of dog fences as they think the electric shock that the dog gets if they go too close to the wire is cruel. Also, electric dog training fences use negative reinforcement in order to keep your dog on your property. The actual shock that your dog receives isn’t powerful enough to cause a significant amount of pain, but there are many dog owner’s that would rather not use this type of dog training fence. It is important to check out the strength of the shock that is emitted by the collar that you are considering and that you feel that it will be safe for your dog. Also, you have to make sure that you are prepared to put in the time required to do the training in order to make these dog fences effective for you. You have to judge for yourself whether an electronic fence system is right for you. All I know, is that my two dogs, only got a very few actual shocks and they were on low current, so they learned when the vibrations started, that they were too close and needed to stay back.

I used to have an island property and had two dogs there. I put in a system that was underground as I didn't want to be moving it around. I also wanted to keep the dogs out of the water when I was not around so I was able to put it around the front of the property and put the wire before the lake so the dogs didn't go in the water. Within the hardware mounted category of dog gates are the retractable gate and the swing gate. These kind of dog training gates need to be installed into your door frame with screws. They are easy to install, durable and will keep your dog confined to the room you choose. These dog gates are suitable for hallways, doorways and the top and bottom of stairs. Within the hardware mounted gate category there are retractable gates and swing gates.

Retractable gates are attached with screws to the one side of your opening, a doorway, a hall or a staircase, and then there is a latch on the other side of the opening where it can be locked.

This gate swings and can be retracted into its closed position so that it can be not so visible if you are not actually using the gate to keep your dog in a room. Usually these gates are 34 inches high and come in either 52 or 72 inch widths.

The swing gate works by expanding like an accordion from the size of 24 inches all the way to 60 inches. These gates are usually about 32 inches in height and they are able to swing in both directions. These gates are mounted and when they are not in use, they collapse down to 24 inches in size.

Then there is the pressure mounted gates. These gates are installed without using any tools, so they don’t damage walls. By using pressure on the gate to keep it in its place, the gate is squeezed into place inside the doorway and then is locked into place. If your dog is smart enough to be able to figure out how to open the lock, then you may need to invest in a safety lock. This gate can be as tall as 42 inches, so is great for a large dog, or a dog that is a jumper. They are suitable for hallways that have solid sides, doorways and the bottom of stairs. These gates can be made of wood, metal or plastic.

Freestanding gates are portable gates that have are adjustable in width, so are suitable for a number of openings. Within the freestanding gate category, there are three varieties of gates. They are the straight freestanding gate, the zigzag freestanding gate, and the multi-configuration gate. The straight freestanding gates can be found in a variety of widths and heights to suit many different openings and size of dog. The zigzag freestanding gate is suitable for a large opening or can also be used as a room divider. There are also some zigzag gates also have an opening in the middle of the gate so that you can walk through the gate. The multi-configuration gates are quite large and are suitable for making a safety barrier around a fireplace, as well closing off a large space. Some people sometimes use this gate as a complete enclosed pen for their dog.

The free standing gates are the least expensive. Some of them are made of plastic and some are made of wood. Some are retractable and some slide. They are opened to the width of the opening and then are pressured into the door frame to close up the area so that the dog cannot get out of the space that they are in. These gates are good for small to medium size dogs, not for large dogs, as their body weight can easily push the gate down. The ones that are freestanding are not to be used at the top of stairs as they could give way. It depends on the type of dog that you have and the dog training that you have given them. My Golden's respected boundaries, so if a gate was put up they stayed behind it. I was able to use the freestanding gates easily even though my dogs were considered large dogs. I never had a stair case that I was gating off, so that didn't come into the picture.

When deciding on what type of dog gate that you need for your home, there are a variety of factors that you need to take into consideration. Some of these include:

• what type of dog you have?
• how active is your dog?
• what size is your dog?

• how big is your house?

• how big an area do you need gated off?

With this type of system, the flap swings out when your dog pushes on it to go through and then it falls back into place once your dog has gone through the door.
